What Supports do Students Need to Succeed in College?

In Community-College Study Asks: What Helps Students Graduate? – Students – The Chronicle of Higher Education Jennifer Gonzalez reviews the first of three reports resulting from a new multi-year project led by the Center for Community College Student Engagement.This report highlights 13 strategies which have been found effective for increasing the likelihood of students staying in school and graduating.

In A Matter of Degrees, practices in three categories, Planning for Success, Initiating Success, and Sustaining Success, are listed as helping to keep students in college and increase graduation rates. These practices are strategies that colleges can put in place to help students succeed, but even if a school doesn’t offer all of these programs, students may be able to develop related strategies to improve their odds of graduation.
